The Manatee County Court as Florida's Lower Trial Tier

Florida statute creates County Court as the limited-jurisdiction trial court in each county. Manatee County Court is the local face of that tier. Judges hear misdemeanors, traffic infractions, small claims, evictions, and county civil cases up to $50,000. The Twelfth Judicial Circuit covers both tiers, so Circuit Court and County Court share the same courthouse and the same Clerk.

For the higher trial tier, see the Manatee County Circuit Court page. Cases that move between tiers happen through appeal, transfer, or refiling. A misdemeanor that gets upgraded to a felony will refile on the Circuit Court side under a felony case number.

The Twelfth Circuit's Judicial Center page describes the building that houses both Circuit and County divisions.

Appeals from the Manatee County Court

Appeals from County Court go to the Circuit Court in many situations under Florida law. The Manatee Clerk's Appeals Department processes the paperwork. Some county-court matters now route to the District Court of Appeal directly under recent rule changes; confirm the current path with counsel because the appellate route depends on case type and recent statutory changes.

A defendant who wants to appeal a misdemeanor conviction or a traffic ruling has a tight deadline under the Florida Rules of Appellate Procedure. Missing the deadline ends the appeal. The Public Defender represents indigent criminal defendants in trial-level cases and certain appeals.

County Court Cases in the Clerk Portal

The Clerk's Court Records portal returns the same fields for county-court cases as for circuit-court cases. The Case Type column tells you whether a result is a Misdemeanor, Traffic Infraction, County Civil, or Small Claims case. Misdemeanor case numbers begin with the year and MM code, while traffic cases use a citation number alongside the Manatee case number. County Civil case files use CC or CO codes depending on the era.

The Clerk's portal also offers a Today's Hearings tab that includes county-court hearings. Filter by case type to limit the result to county-court matters. The Clerk's Public Access and Research office can help if a particular county-court case is not appearing in the public search.
